As the parent of any child will tell you, when your child is sick, it is extremely important that your child receive not only the correct medication, but the correct dosages. In fact, getting the correct formulation of medication is more important for children than just about anyone else. Oftentimes, children are viewed as simply being “little adults” —when, really, this couldn’t be further from the truth.
Children are their own beings, with unique needs and very different responses to medications from adults. Pediatric patients absorb and metabolize medications differently than adults do, so it important that both physicians and pharmacists understand these differences and keep them in mind when working with patients.
With this in mind, it comes as no surprise that a compounding pharmacy is the perfect complement to pediatric medicine. Let’s take a closer look at just some of the reasons these two specialties go hand in hand.
Truth #1: Medicine —even the right medicine— simply can’t work if the patient refuses to take it.
It’s really as simple as that: even the very best medication can’t —and won’t— work if the patient is not willing or able to take the medicine. Many children are unable, or have great difficulty swallowing pills or capsules, and therefore typically have to take medication in a liquid suspension form. The problem is that many children simply don’t like taking medication this way, and even the most dedicated and diligent parent has given up this battle, at one point or another.
Truth #2: Pediatric patients receive the correct dose of the correct medication with a compounding pharmacy.
As we mentioned earlier, it is most important that children receive the correct medication or medications, and in the correct dosages. As a compounding pharmacy, we have the unique ability to tailor make medications, customizing the formulas for each of our patients. In addition, we can also combine medications, so that children don’t have to take as much medicine — making it easier not only on the patient, but on the parents, as well.
Truth #3: A compounding pharmacy can create medications in a variety of forms.
Simply put, children do not like taking medicine. We haven’t met a single parent who doesn’t have a war story or two when it comes to getting their children to take their medicine. Fortunately, compounding pharmacies are able to dispense medications in a variety of forms that are more kid friendly, including easy dissolving tablets, gummies, or even lollipops. Believe it or not, kids often don’t even know they are taking medicine with these forms — again, making it easier for everyone.
Truth #4: A compounding pharmacy can make necessary medication taste better.
When a liquid suspension is required, often the one thing pediatric patients complain about the most is the taste of the medicine. And truthfully, for good reason — medicine just doesn’t taste good. While this isn’t a deal breaker for medication that is only taken infrequently, it can quickly become a point of contention for the parent of a child who has to regularly take medication. Unfortunately, these children can easily develop an increased sensitivity to some aspect of their medication, whether it is the taste or the texture.
Sometimes, this can even lead to an inability to properly take the medicine, either spitting it out or throwing it up after ingesting it. As a compounding pharmacy, we have various flavors that can make liquid medication taste better, making it easier on the patient.
Truth #5: Compounding pharmacies can offer added expertise, education, and support to the patients and their families.
Often, parents can feel overwhelmed when it comes to understanding the medications their children need, from dosing to potential side effects. As a compounding pharmacy, we like to consider ourselves to be experts on the medications we handle. As such experts, we are in a unique position to be able to help parents, answering their questions about the contents of various medications, potential side effects, adverse interactions with other drugs, and more. We pride ourselves on being able to spend more time with our patients, making sure they understand all of their options and have the ability to make informed decisions about their health and the health of their family.
