What is Andrographis?
Andrographis (also known as Andrographis Paniculata, Andrographolide) is an herb found abundantly in South Asian countries such as India and Sri Lanka used in the Ayurvedic medicine and TCM as an anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, antiviral, antioxidant, and immune-enhancing herbal medicine. The leaf and underground stem are used to make medicine and known for a strong bitter taste, which has earned it the name “king of bitters”. (2)
Studies show its immune-enhancing activity and immunomodulating effects include an ability to stimulate both antigen-specific and nonspecific immunity. (3)
Andrographis has been shown to offer good overall immune support especially when combined with immune enhancing adaptogens like Siberian ginseng or eleuthero, a plant that has been traditionally used as an immune system booster and a general stimulant, and olive leaf extract (oleuropein) which comes from the leaves of the olive plant and has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Some formulations also include echinacea and astragalus – both known for immune-modulating as well.
Andrographis is also used for a very wide assortment of other conditions including diarrhea, constipation, intestinal gas, colic, and stomach, enlarged liver, jaundice, pneumonia, tuberculosis, malaria, cholera, leptospirosis, rabies, sinusitis, and HIV/AIDS, and for skin conditions.
