Do you think you’re going through menopause? We’ve all heard of hot flashes and seemingly uncontrollable weight gain, but here’s five menopause symptoms you might not be aware of that occur as a result of menopause.
1. Jaw Pain– As menopause sparks hormonal changes, loss of estrogen in menopause causes deterioration of all joints, including the jaw, resulting in pain and arthritis development. This jaw pain and any TMJ symptoms can worsen during menopause transition.
Plant proteins can alleviate these symptoms. This includes foods like tofu, lentils, almonds, chickpeas and quinoa. In addition to plant proteins- antioxidants and polyphenols in foods can help, along with taking collagen, curcumin, Boswellia, omega-3 and even CBD. And finally, wellness practices like acupuncture, heat compresses and red- light therapy can be beneficial as well.
2. Dry Eyes– Reduced estrogen and testosterone can lead to a reduction of tears.
Over the counter eye drops can provide some immediate relief. Some people report dry eye relief after adding omega-3 fatty acids to their diet. Some other things that can help are to limit your screen time, use warm compress and then wash your eyelids, rest your eyes, and stay away from cigarette smoke.
3. Heart Palpatations– Heart palpitations aren’t usually serious, but rarely they can progress to a more serious condition called atrial fibrillation. Estrogen aids in regulation of the heart, so decreased estrogen can over stimulate the sympathetic nerves to the heart and heart palpitations.
Treatment includes hormone therapy, mind-body medicine, wellness strategies for preventing chronic stress and anxiety (such as meditation, moderate exercise, and eating a healthy diet), as well as magnesium supplementation.
4. Body Odor Changes– Bacteria change on the skin after menopause can lead to production of different scents, which can be unpleasant and negatively affect social interaction.
Gentle body washes, moisturizers like shea butter, and soothing essential oils may help. Consider wearing more breathable clothing. Also, be sure to stay hydrated, as our sweat has a stronger smell when our body lacks water.
5. Increased Mood Swings– While estrogen maintains proper levels of serotonin neurons and oxytocin, creating a feeling of well-being, the decrease in estrogen levels can produce mood swings, anxiety and depression.
Many of the tips described above can help manage the mood swings, including hormone replacement therapy, regular moderate exercise, eating a healthy diet including plant-based proteins, avoiding alcohol and spicy foods, and focusing on getting adequate sleep.
At Pacifica Pharmacy, we do have a full-line of high-quality supplements that can assist with taking action to relieve many of the symptoms described above- including magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, and zzz-leep (for sleep).
