Is Excessive Hair an Issue for You? Consider topical metformin.
If you’ve been diagnosed with ‘Hirsutism’, which is excessive growth of hair in a male like pattern, it might help to know that it is fairly common and affects about 5-10% of women. It is usually caused by an underlying polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) or is of an unknown cause.
As far as treatment is concerned, the commercially available treatment for hirsutism is often expensive for patients. It makes sense for us to look at balancing the hormones or metabolic disorders, but practitioners and pharmacists can also look at other ways to manage unwanted hair that are more cost effective and may provide a quicker solution.
Topical metformin may be a good option, as it is known for reducing circulating androgens, which can decrease the amount of hair as well as hyperpigmentation.
Metformin is an off-label treatment for PCOS because it reduces circulating insulin, which decreases the concentration of free levels of androgens.
Dermatologists have also looked to metformin in many cutaneous disorders including acne, hidradenitis suppurativa and acanthosis nigricans. Recently, it’s shown promising results for treatment of psoriasis. And topically, hyperpigmentation.
This new research into topical metformin may be helpful in combination with some of the more well-known options as well. This includes progesterone, azelaic acid and spironolactone. As a compounding pharmacy we create individualized medication. We can work with your practitioner to develop the right solution for you. Inquire with your doctor or give us a call to learn more.
