If you have spent any amount of time in the city you live in, then you might understand what it means to be connected to where you live. It plays a vital role in our physical, social, and mental health. If you live somewhere where you don’t know anyone and have not found the means to meet others, that lack of connection to others will effect you negatively over time. On the contrary, a strong sense of belonging to your community will have a positive effect on your health and quality of life.
- Social health- having a sense of belonging in your city fosters social support, important to mental health. Rallying behind your local sports teams can help with finding a sense of camaraderie and feeling like you are part of something bigger than you. This also includes engaging with local groups, attending city events, and knowing your neighbors. Engaging in this way reduces any feelings of isolation or loneliness.
- Physical health- connecting through activities can improve your physical health. This includes access to and the ability to make use of local parks, beaches, walking paths, bike lanes and city centers. Sometimes there is a downtown area to walk where you can easily find restaurants, cafe’s, boutiques and other shopping venues. This can accomplish both physical health and social health by interacting in these hot spots. Access to healthy food markets, fitness centers, playgrounds and healthcare facilities are helpful in keeping attention on our physical health as well.
- Mental health- Living in a city that has spaces to interact is good for our well-being. Parks and recreation and adult learning centers can provide classes and opportunities to try new things and meet others as well.
When a city faces challenging times, it can be devastating. We have seen this with extreme weather like hurricanes and fires. The important thing is to not lose hope, to rally around each other and lift each other up. As humans we can experience so much loss, and others outside the situation may not be able to understand what we are going through, but it’s important to remember that we all have challenges. The best we can do is to support each other and help each other out. The strength of our community is really in the people who live there. We’re the ones who cares for the land, the property, the businesses, the people, and we bring it to life.
Our neighbors to the north have been dealing with fires and the devastation that has followed. Last night numerous well-known bands, some who call Los Angeles their home, came together for The FireAid Benefit Concert at the Intuit Dome and Kia Forum to raise money for all affected Angelinos. What better way to lend a hand than to come together for a night of music, solidarity and to have your donation go towards those who need it the most?
